Why is 1000 Islands sauce called that?

The sauce acquired its name thanks to the archipelago of islands, the number of which is about 1800. And they are located on the border of two countries, America and Canada.

It was a favorite place for tourists, including millionaires and tycoons of various kinds. Who eventually built their cottages there.

And George Boldt even built his famous castle. It is believed that the wife of one of the fishermen told the recipe for the sauce to George’s wife.

They liked the dressing and later began to serve it in restaurants at the Waldorf-Astoria hotels. It belonged to a millionaire and the sauce was called “1000 Islands”.

Classic recipe

Sauce consumption is usually difficult to predict. But since this sauce can be added to almost any dish, it makes sense to put more of it on the table.


  • mayonnaise – 100 gr.;
  • ketchup – 50 gr.;
  • chili sauce – 20 gr.;
  • Worcestershire (Worcestershire sauce) – 1 tbsp. l.;
  • fresh garlic – 1 clove;
  • pickled garlic – 1 clove;
  • boiled egg – 1 pc.;
  • green onion – 1 feather;
  • pickled gherkins – 2-3 pcs.;
  • lemon juice, Tobasco, salt, pepper to taste.


  1. Chop the egg, gherkins, pickled garlic into small cubes.
  2. Mash fresh garlic with a knife or grate it.
  3. Chop the onion and mix all the ingredients.
  4. Add mayonnaise, ketchup, chili, Worcestershire, lemon juice and Tobasco, mix well again.
  5. If necessary, add salt and pepper and the sauce is ready!

The sauce should be very thick, you can feel the ingredients in it. You should get a real dip sauce that will go great with French fries.

There is no need to rush to add salt in advance, because mayonnaise, ketchup and mustard already contain salt, sugar and a certain amount of spices. It’s better to try what happened and add everything at the end.

Onions can be replaced with onions; you need one tablespoon of it, chopped.

McDonald’s 1000 Island sauce recipe

McDonald’s offers its customers several types of food that simply require dipping in thick sauce. As a competitor to the usual ketchup, online chefs have come up with a more refined composition of the “1000 Islands” sauce.


  • Mayonnaise – 200 ml.;
  • Ketchup – 50 ml.;
  • Pickled cucumber – 30 gr.;
  • Onions – 30 gr.;
  • Wine vinegar – 40 ml;
  • Boiled egg – 1 pc.;
  • Sweet pepper – 40 gr.;
  • Vegetable oil -1 tbsp. l.;
  • Sugar – 1 h. l.;
  • Salt, black pepper – to taste.
  • Starch – 0.5 h. l.

How to make the sauce:

  1. Chop a little: pepper, egg, cucumber, onion.
  2. Add mayonnaise, ketchup, vinegar, oil, sugar, starch to them.
  3. Blend everything with a blender until smooth, add salt and pepper.
  4. “1000 Islands-McDonald’s” ready!

As you know, sauces at McDuck are always sour, so you can add less vinegar. After all, it is already contained in mayonnaise, ketchup and cucumbers.

By the way, store-bought mayonnaise can be replaced by preparing homemade, which is more healthy.

Sauce with fresh cucumber

This is a sauce option for those who don’t like pickled cucumbers. And a regular cucumber will also greatly refresh the sauce.


  • Mayonnaise – 200 gr.;
  • Ketchup – 2 tbsp. L.;
  • Capers – 1 tbsp. l.;
  • Boiled egg – 1 pc.;
  • Fresh cucumber – 1 pc.;
  • Bell pepper – 0.5 pcs.;
  • Garlic-beet – 0.5 pcs.;
  • Not spicy mustard – 1 tbsp. l.;
  • Lemon juice – 1 tbsp. l.;
  • Salt and pepper to taste.

How to do:

  1. As usual, first of all, chop the cucumber, pepper, egg and onion into cubes.
  2. The capers can be left whole or chopped a little (depending on their size and your taste).
  3. Mix everything and add mayonnaise, ketchup and mustard with lemon juice.
  4. Pepper, mix and add salt.

If you remove the onions, you get a great sauce for breakfast sausages. 1000 islands with lightly salted cucumber are prepared in the same way.

PP or low calorie

The most high-calorie ingredient is mayonnaise. Just replace it with yogurt or low-fat (10%) sour cream. Or prepare according to our recipes PP mayonnaise.


  • Yogurt/sour cream – 200 ml.;
  • Tomato paste – 1 tbsp. L.;
  • Wine vinegar – 1 tbsp. l.;
  • Boiled egg – 1 pc.;
  • Pickled cucumber – 2-3 pcs.;
  • Sweet salad onion – 0.5 heads;
  • Sweet pepper – 0.5 pcs.;
  • Soy sauce – 1 tbsp. l.;
  • Ground pepper to taste.


  1. Chop onion, cucumber, egg and pepper into cubes.
  2. Mix tomato paste with vinegar and soy sauce.
  3. Combine all the ingredients with yogurt, pepper and the healthy 1000 Islands is ready!

As you understand, for greater health, we removed salt and sugar from the recipe. And also the ketchup that contains them. But we will replace them with soy sauce and sweet vegetables.

Spicy (spicy)

“Thousand Islands” in any version has a spicy taste (something sour and spicy). This flavor can be enhanced by adding heat to the 1000 Island Sauce recipe.


  • mayonnaise – 200 ml.;
  • ketchup – 3 tbsp. L.;
  • Worcester sauce – 1 tbsp. L.;
  • garlic – 2 cloves;
  • boiled egg – 1 pc.;
  • onions – 0.5 pcs.;
  • pickled cucumbers – 2-3 pcs.;
  • jalapeño pepper – 1 pod;
  • balsamic vinegar – 2 tbsp. l.
  • hot mustard – 1 tsp;
  • salt, pepper to taste.

Step by step recipe:

  1. Naturally chop the egg, onion, cucumbers,  jalapeño into cubes.
  2. Grind the garlic on a fine grater or squeeze it through a garlic press.
  3. Mix with the rest of the sauce ingredients, pepper and add salt if necessary.

It is better for this sauce to stand in the refrigerator for half an hour. Then the garlic and spiciness will “disperse” better. according to the sauce. Instead of jalapeno, you can use chili pepper or add sriracha.

A simple recipe at home

And lastly, let’s make 1000 Islands sauce like in a restaurant, but at home. You probably have all the ingredients in the refrigerator. There are especially many of them left after the New Year holidays.


  • mayonnaise – 300 gr.;
  • pickled cucumbers – 2 pcs.;
  • ketchup – 3 tbsp. L.;
  • homemade mustard – 1 tbsp. l.

Cooking process:

  1. Grate the cucumbers (you should get about 3 tablespoons), then squeeze the juice from them.
  2. Mix with the rest of the ingredients and your homemade Thousand Island Sauce is ready!

As you understand, the 1000 Islands sauce is being prepared. with mayonnaise and ketchup. Next, add almost any of your favorite vegetables and spices.

Instead of ketchup, tomato paste, Krasnodar sauce or even tomato juice will do. But you have to take into account that there is no added salt, sugar or spices in tomato paste, and Krasnodar sauce is a bit runny.

Any mustard will do. If it is very hot (Russian), then it is better to reduce the portion.

Pickled cucumbers can be replaced with salted ones. Boiled eggs, onions and garlic are also great here. But this will complicate the sauce a little; we gave a simplified recipe. For faster cooking, you can puree everything with a blender.
