How to make Celery Remoulade sauce at home

Remoulade is one of the sauces that is made on the basis of mayonnaise. This is a French sauce, although many say that remoulade is a Danish sauce. But to us it reminds us of our Soviet sauce of mayonnaise and pickled cucumbers.

Making this sauce with your own hands in your kitchen is as easy as shelling pears. Honestly, there is no single classic version of the sauce. There are basic ingredients – mayonnaise, mustard, capers, anchovies and herbs.

We give the recipe with additional ingredients that only complement its taste. In many European countries, remoulade is used as dipping sauce for fast food. Especially for battered fish fillets (Kibbeling), which are dipped directly into the sauce.


  • Homemade mayonnaise – 5 tbsp. l.
  • Natural yogurt – 2 tbsp. l.
  • Russian mustard – 2 tsp.
  • Parsley without stems – 0.5 bunches
  • Capers – 1 tbsp. l.
  • Pickled gherkins – 6 pcs.
  • Garlic – 2 cloves
  • Celery – 0.5 stalks
  • Anchovies – 4 fillets
  • Salt to taste

How to cook:

  1. First of all, chop cucumbers, capers, anchovies and celery with parsley.
  2. Then mix mayonnaise, yogurt and mustard, combine everything together and add grated garlic.
  3. Taste for salt and add more salt if necessary, the sauce is ready!

By the way, you can prepare homemadey mayonnaise yourself, which will be much healthier than store bought. But most importantly, it will be tastier and the Remoulade sauce itself will benefit from this. 

Of course, you can remove the capers, anchovies and celery. But remoulade with celery is healthier, and anchovies along with capers will add piquancy. As a last resort, add olives instead of capers.

Also, green onions and a boiled egg would not go amiss in the sauce, but this is quite far from the classics. We would also like to note that we suggest finely chopping the ingredients, but you can use a blender to blitz everything. This is a matter of taste. In any case, let the sauce sit for half an hour.

Simple recipe

This is an easy and quick recipe based on store-bought mayonnaise. But of course it’s better to prepare your own, you can even make healthy or lean mayonnaise .


  • Mayonnaise – 200 gr.
  • Celery – 1 pod
  • Olives – 2 tbsp. l.
  • Parsley – 1/2 bunch
  • Lemon juice – 2 tbsp. l. 
  • Paprika – 0.5 tsp
  • Dijon mustard – 1 tbsp. l.
  • Salt and pepper to taste.

How to do:

  1. First peel the celery with a vegetable peeler, then chop it into small cubes.
  2. Also chop the olives and chop the parsley.
  3. Mix everything with mayonnaise, Dijon mustard and paprika, pepper and add salt if necessary.

They eat this sauce with fried fish, spread it on a sandwich, and serve it as sauce for boiled pork. It also goes well with sausages, cutlets and especially french fries.
