Finally, we will tell you how to make classic tzatziki sauce at home. This light, refreshing sauce from Greece is not just for gyros. But it’s also as simple as dipping sauce for buns, country-style potatoes or with boiled chicken breast.

Classic recipe

Tzatziki (tzatziki) involves the use of Greek yogurt. It is thick, like sour cream and without any flavoring additives. It is made with fresh cucumbers and garlic.


  • Greek yogurt – 200 ml.
  • Fresh cucumber – 1 pc. 
  • Garlic – 1 clove
  • Olive oil – 1 tbsp. l.
  • Pinch of salt

How to cook:

  1. Peel the cucumber and grate it on a fine grater, then place it on a sieve.
  2. Pressing with a spoon, squeeze the cucumber from the water, then add a little salt and leave until more juice comes out and squeeze again.
  3. Grate the garlic or pass it through a press; you can simply chop it finely and then crush it into a puree with a knife.
  4. Mix everything with yogurt, taste for salt, add salt if necessary and add olive oil.
  5. Cucumber sauce with herbs and garlic tzatziki, ready!

With sour cream

This is a variation of tzatziki sauce. The sour cream recipe is less Greek, but it has its place. Moreover, Greek yogurt is not always available. But, if you want a taste as close as possible to tzatziki, we recommend using low-fat sour cream.

It is, of course, more liquid than high-fat sour cream, but this is not a problem. Line a sieve with gauze and pour the sour cream into it, then put it in the refrigerator for a while. When the excess whey drains, you will get a mass reminiscent of Greek yogurt.

We will need:

  • Cream – 200 ml
  • Fresh cucumber – 1 pc.
  • Garlic – 1 clove
  • Lemon juice – 1 tsp.
  • Dill – 0.5 bunch
  • Salt, ground black pepper to taste

How to do:

  1. First, make sour cream as we described or take a fattier one, it is thicker.
  2. We also grate and squeeze the cucumber on a fine grater.
  3. Chop the garlic and dill, mix everything together and add salt and pepper.
  4. Sour cream tzatziki is ready!

This sauce is perfect for meat and fish, as well as vegetables. Use it  for French fries or as a salad dressing.

As you understand, making satsiki sauce at home is not difficult. In addition, yogurt can be replaced with sour cream or matsoni. Add herbs, ground pepper and lemon juice to it.

The only constant ingredients remain cucumber and garlic. As a sauce for zucchini pancakes it’s perfect!

What do they eat with?

In addition to gyros or as sauce for a burger, tzatziki is eaten with fried meat, chicken, and lamb. It is served with grilled vegetables and simply with vegetable crudité, similar to blue cheese sauce.

Tzatziki can be eaten with potato pancakes, cutlets, and sausages. Put it on hot dogs and as shawarma sauce. Kebabs, sauce for dumplings and manti, for khinkali, feel free to serve it with them.

Boiled tongue and boiled pork, turkey and rabbit, tzatziki goes great with these dishes. They even eat fried cheese and various pastries with it, from pancakes to pies.
